"Most managers spend up to 10 hours a week in meetings, and 90% say more
than half that time is wasted."
Qualities of a
Good Leader
Warren Bennis, author of "Leaders" (1985), "On Becoming a
Leader" (1989), "Managing People Is Like Herding Cats" (1997) and "Learning
to Lead" (2003) books identified various effective leadership qualities in
his writings. Below are four qualities that are often repeated in some
form:
-
Integrity
-
Trust
-
Commitment
-
Strategic Thinking

Communication is important to
management success, yet often these tools can also be a waste of time.
Managers read lots of emails each day and prefer the emails be short and to
the point. Since many of them are also reading their emails on-the-go
using phones and PDAs, they often prefer to not have to open large attachments.
Some managers prefer a short voice mail to an email, especially if an urgent
reply is needed. Verify the manager's preferences for offsite
communication methods and length. Remember to use appropriate email
and phone etiquette as well.
If you are
planning a lunch or short program to honor a leader, consider having the
group do a "Play on Words" activity as a way to recognize the individual.
Before the event, have each person in your group write down a word or two they feel describes
the leader or characteristics he displays. Then take the words and put
them together to create an acrostic using the leader's name or develop them into a
short rhyme using the words and his name. Neatly type it and then read
it and present typed version to the leader at the lunch or program. If you want
to be really creative and fun, consider a rap of the rhyme.
"The function of leadership is to produce more
leaders, not more followers." - Ralph Nader
