Striking Statistic
According to the Standish Group, 31%
of software projects are cancelled before ever reaching the customer,
while 53% cost 189% or more of their original budgets. Some experts believe
that 40%-60% of software defects and failures are due to bad requirements.

Timely Tip
The project
specification, sometimes referred to as a requirements document, takes the
project objective and then builds detail text of what the outcome of the
project will look like.
From a
well-written specification, the project manager can get a better idea of
what type of resources are necessary in order to come up with a more
accurate plan for the project. If the project manager does not know how to
create a specification or is unsure of what things should be in a
specification, consulting with someone who has experience in similar
projects for help is recommended. The project specification is the key to
successful planning and implementation completion, therefore it needs to be
as correct as possible.
Computer Clue
Use a good word processing
application to outline and then write a project specification. A clear
specification with headings can make it easier for project team members to
find the section that applies to their portion of the work. It also
makes and excellent detailed checklist for the customer of the project to
use to verify that all requirements have been spelled-out before planning
budgets and schedules is done. A good budget and schedule are
important elements in project planning and implementation. Excellent
tools exist that make this part of project planning easier too.

Group
Gathering (NEW)
An activity or icebreaker before a group
starts work at a meeting, after a break, or during a celebration can help
everyone to get better acquainted and draw closer as a team. A
well-known
icebreaker has each member of the group complete a pre-selected
sentence with a story from their personal experience or desire. Here are some
popular ideas
for the sentence beginning:
-
The best job I ever had was...
-
If I could do anything I wanted, I would
...
-
The worst project I ever worked on was...
-
My ideal job would be ...
-
The riskiest thing I ever did was...
If using
this icebreaker as a "getting to know you better" verses "getting
acquainted", be sure to have members state 1-2 reasons why they said what
they said. These whys can give some insight on possible turn-on or turnoffs
for each individual.

"It is common sense to take a method and try
it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try
something." - Franklin D. Roosevelt |
