Need tips to help with setting-up a home or business filing system that is easy for anyone to maintain? The Organizing Wizard provides tips on: where and how to store files, setting-up a filing system, sharing the system with others, and maintaining the system over time.
Read details in Shirley's article called "Everyone hates filing! Yet, everyone wants an organized office, right?" at
Where possible, transfer any paper files to computer disks via scanning to prevent having to have file storage for the paper. Be sure to make folders (directories) on the computer using the same types of categories one might use for paper files. Then each individual file (or document) related to that category would be placed in that folder. Be sure to name the files in a way that what is in them is easy to figure out without having to open the file. Do not use periods (.) in names as this may confuse the system regarding file extensions, however may use underscore symbol. See the example file and folder names in the following table.
